2021 Gerry Couture Stewardship Award

Recognizing Yukon’s Conservation Champions: Joy Snyder Wins the 2021 Gerry Couture Stewardship Award

December 10, 2021 (Whitehorse, YT)

The Yukon Conservation Society (YCS) is very pleased to announce that Joy Snyder has been awarded the 2021 Gerry Couture Stewardship Award. The $1000 prize is awarded annually for outstanding personal dedication to natural resource conservation and management in the Yukon. This is the 12th year that this award has been presented.

Upon being informed that she had been selected as this year’s recipient, Joy said, “Wow I feel very honoured to be recognized by YCS for the work I have done over the past 30 years. Someone noticed!!!!”

Joy first came to the Yukon in the late 1970s to work at the Kluane Research Station with the snowshoe hare program. She spent subsequent summers working throughout the northern Yukon with both the Department of Environment and the Canadian Wildlife Service. From these experiences her appreciation of large intact ecosystems developed into a passion for the natural world, and a desire to protect it. Recycling was a way to exercise this passion. “If we extract resources from the earth, it is our duty to use them over and over again and recycling is one piece of that process.” Joy has worked at Raven Recycling for 30 years; the last 20 as the Executive Director.

Coral Voss, Executive Director of YCS presented the award to Joy at a small ceremony at Parnell House on December 10th. “I am honoured to have the opportunity to recognize Joy for her extraordinary lifetime of conservation and recycling efforts on behalf of all of us that call this tiny blue planet home. Congratulations Joy!”

Joy responded, "To me, receiving this environmental award is really a recognition of Raven's role and commitment to the environment; Yukoners share a passion for the pristine wilderness that surrounds us. For the past 20 years, I have been lucky to lead an organization that supports that passion, alongside the staff, Board members and community.”

Selection of the recipient for the award is made by the inspiration of Gerry Couture’s fearlessness, creativity, innovation, and “curmudgeonliness”. Couture was a respected member of the Yukon Fish and Wildlife Management Board and the Yukon Salmon Committee. He also worked as YCS’ mining analyst until 2009, and as a commercial pilot, homesteader, trapper, commercial fisherman, and placer miner.
