Biodiversity Day 2020

Happy International Biodiversity Day earthlings!

Today we try to take a few moments to acknowledge and appreciate the astonishing variety of living organisms that surround and nurture us.

I write this while sitting in my garden, surrounded by trees that are bursting with fresh growth, by the songs of newly arrived birds defending breeding grounds, breathing pure fresh air redolent with earthy living aromas.

This is biodiversity. Life. And, just as for our bodies to work to their full potential we need all our organs healthy, so too for the planet to function it needs a broad assemblage of different species, all working together to support each other.

We are lucky in the Yukon, in that in most places the web of life is still intact. An intact and biodiverse world is more robust and more resilient. It is better able to withstand shocks and to recover from their effects.

Tread lightly on this earth and appreciate the life we have. It’s the only one there is.
