Created at the Canyon

Created at the Canyon presents original art on the trails, inspired by the natural and cultural history of Kwanlin/Miles Canyon & Canyon City! The free event aims to connect Yukoners with our landscape and history through creative media, as well as to support local artists connecting with each other, the public, and the natural world. We aim to feature artists of all ages from all walks of life, who will explore the landscape and history of the area through a variety of perspectives and media. This is a paid opportunity for artists.

Created at the Canyon is a free outdoors art event celebrating artistic perspectives on nature and history in the Yukon, hosted by the Yukon Conservation Society (YCS). YCS has hosted an “art on the trails” event at Miles Canyon since 2012. These events give local artists an opportunity to reflect on and create art outdoors while sharing their process and inspiration with the public.

At the 12th annual Created at the Canyon, YCS sponsored seven local artists to share their craft and connection to nature, and to engage the community with their creative process by providing the public the opportunity to participate.

This year’s art-in-nature event featured Indigenous artists from the Yukon, British Columbia and Manitoba, as well as non-Indigenous creatives, all of who practice art in environmentally-mindful ways.

Commonly celebrated Yukon history and culture often minimize or exclude Indigenous perspectives, focusing mainly on the Klondike Gold Rush through the lens of Yukon settlers. With 2023 marking the 125th anniversary of the Yukon, we were determined to amplify Indigenous perspectives, culture and creativity.

Thank you to the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre for hosting this year’s exhibit and playing an instrumental role in incorporating First Nation artists into this year’s event.
