12th annual Created at the Canyon art-in-nature event happening July 14 and 15, 2023

The 12th annual Created at the Canyon free art-in-nature event will be happening Friday, July 14 and Saturday, July 15 at Kwanlin (Miles Canyon). This year’s outdoor event will feature sustainable art materials, opportunities to participate in creating art, and more Indigenous culture.

Created at the Canyon connects Yukoners and visitors to Yukon landscape and history through creative art media, while supporting local artists. The art-in-nature event will feature local artists as Demonstration Artists and Creative Workshop Leaders. Demonstration Artists will create original artwork in Kwanlin (Miles Canyon) over the two days while interacting with the public. Creative Workshop Leaders will lead the public to collaboratively create art and will provide educational opportunities.

Artists who use sustainable, ethical and local materials, including materials that are naturally-derived, biodegradable, or salvaged will be featured. Alongside artists using eco-friendly materials will be Indigenous artists. To commemorate the Yukon’s 125th anniversary, Created at the Canyon will further provide platforms to share and celebrate Indigenous perspectives and cultures, which have historically been underrepresented in the Yukon’s Klondike Gold Rush history.

Participating artists have the opportunity to sell art from their collection at Created at the Canyon.

The art created during the event will be showcased in an exhibit at the Kwanlin Dün Culture Centre in August.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Yukoners and tourists to another year of Created at the Canyon. It’s a fun way to support local artists while connecting artists and attendees to the power and beauty of Kwanlin. Connecting with nature fosters awareness, respect, and the need to conserve our land and water.”

Martin Melendro, Executive Director of the Yukon Conservation Society
